Pakistan, Sri Lanka to release Indian fishermen as goodwill gesture ahead of Modi's swearing-in

New Delhi: The President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa and Pakistan has ordered the release of Indian fishermen a day ahead of Modi's swearing-in ceremony. The Sri Lankan President ordered the release of all Indian fishermen on Monday as a goodwill gesture to mark Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony on May 26. According to the presidential spokesperson, Rajapaksa ordered the release on Sunday, a day ahead of his visit to New Delhi. It is notable that India was one of the 12 nations that abstained from voting on the UNHRC resolution, which prescribed an international probe into Sri Lanka’s alleged rights abuses. Rajapaksa tweeted on Twitter "As a goodwill measure on the occasion of Narendra Modi's swearing-in, President instructs officials to release Indian fishermen in custody." Also, Pakistan has decided to release 151 fishermen, who were arrested for allegedly entering into their territorial waters by Pakistan's marine authorities, on the same day as well. Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lanka President Rajapaksa are invited for swearing-in ceremony of PM designate Narendra Modi. A team from Gujarat has been sent to receive the fishermen to be released by Pakistan at Wagah border on Monday. A state government official said that the Indian fishermen will be brought to Veraval in Gir Somnath district. Thereafter, they will leave for their residence.
