Pioneer of Indian comics, creator of Chacha Chaudhary, dies at 75

New Delhi: India's well-known cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma, who got fame for his popular comic series ‘Chacha Chaudhary’, breathed his last in Gurgaon on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 45-year-old. He was born on August 15, 1938 at Kasur in Lahore, now in Pakistan. After partition, Pran along with his family migrated to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. After completing masters in political science, he completed a four-year course in fine arts from Mumbai's JJ School of Arts. He started his career as a cartoonist with a Delhi-based Hindi newspaper 'Milap' in 1960 with comic strip 'Dabbu'. In 1969, he created second comic series ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ for Hindi magazine Lotpot, which made him famous. He also sketched other popular characters like ‘Channie Chachi’, ‘Billoo’, ‘Pinki’, ‘Raman’ and ‘Shrimatiji’. Indian Institute of Cartoonists honoured Pran with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He was also included in People of the year 1995 by Limca Book of Records for popularizing comics in India. Pran got the title of "Walt Disney of India" in The World Encyclopedia of Comics. His Chacha Chaudhary strips find permanent place in International Museum of Cartoon Art, USA. He will be cremated at 2.30 pm on Wednesday.
