Women seers form country's first all-women 'Mahila akhada' in Allahabad - Bhaskar News | Feb 16, 2014, 10:17AM IST

Lucknow/Allahabad: Challenging domination of male seers in Hindu religion, sanyasins have formed their own independent religious formation "Shri Sarveshwar Maha Baikunth Dham Mukti Dwar Akhada Parisampradaya". Opposing the All India Akhada Parishad and prominent sant-mahants, 'Shankaracharya' Trikal Bhavanta (Woman seer) led a group of about 50 sanyasins (women seers) in a procession from her camp in the Magh Mela area on the banks of the Sangam (confluence of rivers) here. The sanyasins performed 'Ganga poojan' and 'Ganga abhishek' before proclaiming the formation of the 14th 'akhada' of the country. According to the sanyasins, the akhada is a symbol of independence for women in the world of religion and spirituality. However, Mahant Gyan Das, President, All India Akhada Parishad rejected the all-women 'akhada' saying this was against religious traditions. "Mahila akhada is against the tradition. so there is no question of giving it recognition," he told reporters. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Trikal Bhavanta said the akhara would work for the betterment of women seers and saints and its headquarter would be in Prayag. "We'll emphasize on extending "special rights for sanyasins and women saints in the field of meditation, spiritual, social and other fields," she said.
