FREE DRUGS, BOOZE & CASH TO WOO VOTERS? Poll panel seizes R 300 crore, over 1 lakh litres of alcohol

New Delhi: Despite Election Commission’s restriction, the political parties are leaving no stone unturned in luring voters with alcohol and money, suggests the electoral watchdog's latest report for 28 states and seven union territories. According to a report published in TOI, Rs. 300 crore and 1.33 lakh litres of alcohol and 30,000 kg of narcotics have been seized by the Election Commission, which it believes was meant to buy off voters and pay for expenses over. The information about the use of black money during election campaigning is not new but this is the first general elections that's being covered under the effort. According to the electoral watchdog's latest report for 28 states and seven union territories, as of April 17, the largest amount of narcotics has been seized from Himachal Pradesh followed by Rajasthan. However, the EC hasn't yet officialy released the figures. The report states Andhra Pradesh tops the list of states for the highest seizure of both cash and liquor. The English Daily quoted one of the EC officials as saying, "The narcotics seizure includes heroin, opium, hash, weed and chemical drugs and is worth thousands of crores." With a motive to curb such illegal flow of money and drugs, the commission has set up a monitoring committee of senior officials drawn from the revenue and intelligence services. Reportedly, the departments and agencies that are contributing to this first ever drive against such illegal practices are Income Tax Intelligence, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, Narcotics Control Bureau, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the intelligence wings of the Border Security Force and more. The monitoring committee has been carrying out checks on candidates and party workers. The report, however, hasn't revealed the parties and candidates' names involved in such illegal activities.
