Two youths booked for passing racist comment against north eastern students

New Delhi: Two youth were arrested by the Delhi Police on Sunday for passing the racist remark over a north eastern student. The incident happened at around 10:30 pm in north Delhi's Maurice nagar region which is close to the north campus of Delhi University. Hemang Haokip from Manipur in north east India filed a complaint against Amit Kumar and Akash Kumar who made the racist comment against him. One of the police officials said 'The victim and the two accused are neighbours and reside in rented accommodations in the Christian Colony in Maurice Nagar.' Amit and Akash both hail from Chhapra region in Bihar. Both of them are booked under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989 (Prevention of Atrocities). Police said that Haokip heard both the boys talking about north eastern people while he was taking a stroll near his room. He heard them making racist comments against them. Thereafter, Haokip opposed the views of accused duo which led to an argument among them. He then went to the police station along with his other friends and registered a complaint against Amit and Akash on Saturday at midnight. Haokip has been preparing for the civil services examination for few years while accused are work in private firms.
