PROTESTS TURN VIOLENT IN SRINAGAR: Valley running high on anti-Israel sentiments

Srinagar: Massive protests broke out in the valley after a section of Kashmiri youth clashed with the police in parts of Srinagar post Eid prayers on Tuesday. The youth were protesting against Israel’s offensive against Gaza, with many shouting anti-Israel and pro-freedom slogans. Protesters in the Eidgah area clashed with police officers who used tear gas and lathicharged the demonstrators. Dozens of young men pelted stones at police personnel in the towns of Baramulla, Sopore and Anantnag. Stoning was also reported from Lal Chowk, the heart of Srinagar, as well as Hyderpora and other parts of the city's old quarters. The administration had placed senior separatist leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Muhammad Yasin Malik under house arrest to maintain peace. Keeping in mind the Eid atmosphere, police exercised restraint while dispersing the protesters. Authorities were on high alert fearing tensions ahead of Eid. Several protesters were also seen holding Palestinian and ISIS flags during the violent demonstrations.
