Sattar urges for LG system to strengthen democracy

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Farooq Sattar on Sunday said basic issues should be resolved for political stability in Pakistan, for that he demanded establishment of an effective, powerful and independent local government system in the country, DawnNews reported. Speaking at a press conference here, he said the country was being pushed towards turmoil as differences were widening between the political forces, emphasising on more public participation in the democratic process. The MQM leader termed the sea view tragedy as a question mark on competency of policy makers, saying the people were being left alone by the authorities in the incident. Dozens of bathers had died at Sea View and Hawkes bay beaches during the Eid holidays earlier in the week. Sattar urged for a probe into the tragedy to ascertain real reasons that caused it, adding that an institution must take responsibility for the incident. The MQM leader also lashed out at the concerned authorities on the prevailing water shortages in Karachi. He expressed his concerns that the issue may lead to ethnic riots within in a year.
