Curtain rises on thrilling ICC World Twenty20

DHAKA: As many as 35 tournament matches will be played across Chittagong, Dhaka and Sylhet in Bangladesh during the 22-day ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 tournament, which begins here on Sunday (today) with a match between hosts Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Hong Kong and Nepal will meet in Chittagong later in the day. The format for the men’s event has been changed following an increase in teams from 12 to 16. As the teams’ seedings are based on the Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings Table as of October 8, 2012, the top eight sides following the conclusion of the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 will play directly in the Super 10 stage, while Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, who finished outside the top eight, will participate in the first round that will be held from March 16-21. The first round of the event will include eight sides that will be divided into two groups of four teams each, with the table-toppers progressing to the Super 10 stage. The Super 10 stage will start with an evening match between former champions India and Pakistan in Dhaka on March 21. The Group 1 of Super Ten will comprise Sri Lanka, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Group B Qualifier 1 (Q1B), while Group 2 will be constituted by West Indies, India, Pakistan, Australia and Group A Qualifier 1 (Q1A). Reigning champions West Indies will launch their title defense against India in an evening match on March 23. If Bangladesh reach the Super 10 stage, they will play all their matches in Dhaka, facing the West Indies on March 25, India on 28, Pakistan on 30 and Australia on April 1. Sri Lanka will start the ICC World Twenty20 as the No 1 ranked side on the ICC T20I Team Rankings Table. Sri Lanka, runners-up in 2009 and 2012, are at the top of the table with 129 ratings points, leading number-two ranked and 2007 champions India by six ratings points. Eight ratings points separate the top three sides with 2009 winners Pakistan in the third position with 121 ratings points. Sri Lanka launch their campaign on March 22 against South Africa in the Super 10 stage of the tournament at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong. Defending champions West Indies will start off in sixth place with 110 ratings points. West Indies slipped to sixth spot despite winning the three-match series against England 2-1, while 2010 champions England will enter the tournament in the eighth position. West Indies will launch their title defence against India on March 23 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.
