HC upholds death sentence of 4 convicts in Nirbhaya gang-rape case BUT WHEN WILL THEY BE HANGED?

New Delhi: Delhi HC on Thursday upheld the order of the fast-track court and gave death sentence to all the four convicts involved in the brutal gang-rape of a female intern in 2012. The four convicts- Mukesh (26), Akshay Thakur (28), Pawan Gupta (19) and Vinay Sharma (20)- were awarded death penalty by a division bench of Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Prathiba Rani. The lawyer of the convicts has termed the ruling as a politically motivated judgement and said that they will approach the Supreme Court against the ruling. The 23-year-old girl was brutally raped by six men on the night of 16 December, 2012, in Delhi's Munirka area. The incident evoked strong emotions across the nation and beyond. Protest cum solidarity marches were taken out across the nation. Public protests against the Government of India and the government of Delhi for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in New Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with security forces. Similar protests took place in major cities throughout the country. The lost her life after desperate attempts to save her failed. She passed away in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital on December 28, 2012 after undergoing emergency treatment. One of the six accused was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Delhi's Tihar Jail. Another accused, a juvenile, was sentenced by the Juvenile Justice Board to a reform home for three years. On September 10, 2013, the remaining four accused were found guilty of rape, murder, unnatural offences and destruction of evidence and sentenced to death by the fast-track court set up to try the rape and sexual assault case. Social activists Kiran Bedi was one amongst the first to give her reaction on the verdict. She said, "now the question is how soon Supreme Court and President of India finalise the decision." She confirmed her belief that the perpetrators of the crime will be hung to death one day.
