Tehelka Sexual Assault Case: CCTV footage shows victim smiling, chasing Tejpal & not 'holding back tears'

Panaji: The sexual assault case against alleged Tehelka journalist Tarun Tejpal case has taken a new twist. The CCTV footage recovered from the hotel where a female Tehelka employee was sexually assaulted tells a different story. According to defense lawyer of Tarun Tejpal Amit Desai, there is no point of any case against his client after watching the CCTV recording. Tejpal's family has been showing the video of the night the female reporter claims she was assaulted in the lift by Tejpal to several acquaintances in Delhi. At Bombay High Court in Goa, Tejpal's lawyer said that the video completely contradicts the statement made by the victim. In one of her e-mails to Shoma Chaudhary, the victim had said that in November last year, Tejpal cornered her in the elevator of five star hotel where company's Think Fest was held and then sexually assaulted her. She wrote that Tejpal chased her again after they came out of the lift and also threatened her that the easiest way for her to keep her job was to consent him for the act. On the other side, the footage recovered from the hotel clearly shows the victim smiling and running behind Tejpal other than 'holding back her tears'. Amit Desai said that there is no case after watching the footage where as the lawyer for the Goa Crime Branch Saresh Lotikar said that Tejpal cannot be released from jail. Lotikar added that Tejpal might try to influence the witnesses of the case if he is given bail. Claiming that Tejpal's family has been sharing the CCTV video with everyone in Delhi, Lotikar said that the accused cannot be expected to be disciplined. After the hearing of the case on March 4, 2014, the Bombay High Court postponed the decision on Tehelka Chief Tarun Tejpal's bail plea in rape case till March 14 which is Friday.
