Self-immolation: SC takes suo motu notice of rape victim's death

MUZAFFARABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday took suo motu notice of the death of a rape victim who died after she set herself on fire, Express News reported. The girl had set herself on fire on March 13 in front of the Mir Hazar Khan police station after hearing that the suspects who had allegedly raped her were granted bail. With 70% of the body burnt, the girl succumbed to her injuries today in the hospital. Opposition members in the Punjab Assembly staged a walk out, protesting the incident. They claimed that the government has failed to perform its duties. Police have arrested the main accused and investigating officer Rana Zulfiqar, who had said that the accused were innocent and that’s why released on bail. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had taken notice of the incident and had directed the authorities concerned to submit a report. He had also issued directives that the victim should be provided the best possible medical care. Police had registered a rape case against six suspects on January 5.
