Rahul Gandhi's absence at PM's farewell dinner an insult: Rivals

New Delhi: The opposition parties have come in open to condemn Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s move of skipping party President Sonia Gandhi's farewell dinner for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday in strong words. While some said that Rahul’s absence in an insult to outgoing PM, others stated that it had been his responsibility to be present at such an important event. Congress, on the other hand, is trying its best to defend Nehru-Gandhi scion for his conduct saying that he met Singh before going abroad, therefore the question of an insult doesn’t really arise. "Rahul Gandhi met the PM before going abroad, there is no question of an insult," party leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi said. Opposition parties from Bharatiya Janata Party to Samajwadi Party, all tool their chance to criticize Rahul for his unexpected absence. Abhimanyu Singh, BJP, said that it is known to all how Singh was treated in the Congress. A man who served as PM for 10 years "deserves a befitting farewell. Rahul Gandhi should have been there." Naresh Agarwal of SP adopted a much harder approach and alleged that it was an insult to Singh as Rahul "thought of himself, above the country." Leaders from other parties as well took the note of the advancements and didn’t approve of what Rahul did. "For 10 years you ruled this country, your PM ruled this country, if you could not take out time for his farewell dinner, then how will you take out time for the nation?" questioned the spokesperson of Shiv Sena Sanjay Raut. Manmohan Singh had announced his retirement and declared that he is not in race to be the next Prime Minister. Sonia Gandhi organised a farewell dinner as a mark of respect for the PM. As Rahul skipped the dinner, his office issued a statement saying that, "Rahul Gandhi met the PM on Saturday to say that he won't be in town. He thanked him already."
