Chennai building collapse: Death toll goes up to 42, dozens still feared trapped in the debris

Chennai: The death toll in the under-construction residential building that collapsed on June 28 has risen to 42 on Wednesday. Rescue operations are still on to pull out more survivors trapped under the debris. Director of Public Health K Kulandaisamy said that of the 42 deceased persons, 28 were men and the rest women. A total of 69 persons had been pulled out dead or alive from under the debris of the collapsed structure by rescue personnel since Saturday when the mishap occurred. CM Jayalalithaa said that the builder had violated the norms. Six including the real estate developer have been arrested by the police for the negligence. 27 have been rescued so far. A woman who was pulled out of the debris almost 60 hours after the building collapsed died on Tuesday at the hospital.
